Studios and Workspaces

We work with artist studios, and with galleries and other organisations on the spaces they need to enable operations. With Caruso St John Will Pirkis led office projects for Blain Southern Gallery, for Gagosian at Grosvenor Hill, Britannia Street and Burlington Arcade, and a prototyping studio for Kvadrat Acoustics.

The studio for Kvadrat Acoustics, completed with Caruso St John in 2016, is a renovation of an existing 1970s port building in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn, close to the Kvadrat showroom. The project provides a flexible space for the design, development and testing of acoustic textile products, as well as events, presentations and small concerts for clients. The existing space is stripped to its concrete frame and the concrete floor is ground and polished, like an in-situ terrazzo. New partition walls, stair and doors are constructed in solid cross-laminated spruce, recalling the packing crates of the shipping port. Illuminated ceilings and acoustic panels by Kvadrat Acoustics, with different fabric surfaces, temper the environment of each space. Timber beams with Unistrut inlays allow products to be easily hung from the ceiling for testing. It is a controlled environment for prototyping and precise fabrication, like the studio of a Renaissance sculptor. Since the project was completed, Kvadrat Acoustics have expanded their offices into adjacent units in the port building, with the studio at the core.
