Alex Israel exhibition at Gagosian Davies Street

An exhibition of new fin sculptures by Alex Israel, titled Upside Down, has opened at Gagosian’s Davies Street gallery. Will Pirkis Architects worked on the installation with the gallery and structural engineer Price & Myers.

Machined from acrylic resin, each fin weighs around 600 kilograms and differs in colour, reflectivity and transparency. The sculptures connect the freedom and optimism of Southern Californian surf culture with the perceptual qualities associated with Los Angeles art from the 1960s. Earlier versions of the fins were installed on plinths at Gagosian Rome, while here, for the first time, they are suspended from the ceiling. Inverted and backlit, they appear through the large street-facing windows as if in a tank, giving the works a new spatial dimension.
